Fort Collins Utilizes Green Energy Practices

Everyone agrees that “going green” is the best way to reduce energy consumption and make better use of our natural resources and energy. Last year, the Fort Collins City Council agreed to adopt some of the most admirable and the most aggressive goals in the U.S., designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the community. The goals are designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 20 percent below 2005 levels by the year 2020 and 80 percent by 2030, which would put Fort Collins on a trajectory to be carbon neutral by 2050!

There are many areas of the community that will be more “green.” From building structures with energy efficient factors in mind to reducing water usage, look at some of the ways that Fort Collins is working towards a greener future:

  • Building Sites - Development that incorporates on-site energy generation, food production, composting, water treatment, and other restorative or regenerative features
  • Buildings - Structures designed or retrofitted to maximize energy efficiency, minimize water use and overall waste generation, and use sustainable materials that can easily be recycled and/or replaced without additional fuel or energy
  • Transportation – Internal Infrastructure that supports non-fossil fuel based vehicles such as electric cars, alternative fuels, and support of greener modes of transportation
  • Energy - Infrastructure that supports generation and transmission of renewable energy sources
  • Water – Conservation that manages storm water with landscaping, soils, and permeable surfaces and site design that minimizes water use within a given area
  • Green Space – Attractive spaces for food production, water storage and treatment, recreation and natural systems that all serve ecosystem health
  • Sustainable Development – Master planning and overall land use that will use green building principles and provide for sustainable management of all resources

There are also some easy things that Fort Collins residents can do to go green at home or in the workplace. Here are some tips that are easy to implement:

  • Turn off your computer and monitor at the end of the day. You’re computer might be “asleep,” but it is still using energy!
  • Support green businesses
  • Carpool
  • Upgrade to a programmable thermostat to make better use of your energy management. Never heat or cool a home (or business) while you’re away. Adjust accordingly.
  • Recycle all newspapers, glass and plastic and don’t forget to take your plastic grocery bags back to the store to be recycled.
