Colorado State University College of Agricultural Sciences
With so many global challenges facing our world, Colorado State University College of Agricultural Sciences has devoted itself to challenging areas of protecting the environment, feeding a global population and improving the quality of life. Teaching, research and outreach at the College of Agricultural Sciences is focused on these core areas.
The college is a foundation at a leading land-grant university and it prides itself on building on Aggie traditions in a way that speaks to contemporary challenges all around the world. The College of Agricultural Sciences features nine undergraduate majors, minors and concentration options. Of particular focus at the college is the growing global demand for food and the unique challenges that will we will be facing as our global population is expected to balloon to 9 billion by the year 2050.
In developments closer to campus, there are four new facilities planned for the College of Agricultural Sciences. The new state-of-the-art buildings will foster innovation, creativity and cutting-edge breakthroughs.
The first building is the CoBank Center for Agricultural Education that will house the Agricultural Education and Agricultural Literacy Programs. It will include classrooms, conference rooms, laboratories and many opportunities hands-on learning experiences. The center is a collaboration between the College of Agricultural Sciences and the Colorado FFA Foundation.
The Gary and Kay Smith Global Food Innovation Center will center on animal-handling practices, meat-processing methods and other areas of industry collaboration. Of note, the building will house a complete livestock, poultry and meat processing center, a culinary research and sensory analysis facility, an auditorium and meat demonstration classroom, plus a meat and dairy retail store and café.
The Tempe Grandin Equine Center will be a space for those working in equine-assisted activities and therapies. The center will impact thousands by improving the quality of life for those dealing with autism, PTSD and other neurological conditions. The building is a collaborative project with the CSU College of Health and Human Sciences and the CSU College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.
Lastly is the CSU Horticulture Center which will feature a controlled environment agricultural facility and will also be home to some of the current greenhouse research already in place. It will also house future growing seasons for the Annual Flower Trial Garden.
In other news at CSU, the college offers a degree program in Fermentation Science and Technology. This is a brand new major that includes the development of practical research, hands-on learning and industry outreach as it relates to the growing fermentation-related industries in Colorado, across the United States and around the globe. This program is currently offered in the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition in the College of Health and Human Sciences.
